Queenstown Holiday Home
Queenstown Holiday Home
This design was a wonderful opportunity to create a holiday home for a family and their friends on a sloping site in Queenstown that will take in the sweeping 270-degree view of the Remarkables to Lake Wakitipu and Walter Peak beyond.
The clients have teenage children, and wanted a large communal kitchen hub with separate scullery, large open plan lounge and dining for entertaining and all four bedrooms orientated to the views. A separate media room was also designed as a hang out space for the family. A large deck off the kitchen and living area has the commanding views of the gondola and mountain to the east to be enjoyed while soaking in the hot tub or lounging on the deck with friends and family.
The home also required flexibility to have one of the bedrooms with ensuite available to offer as separate guest accommodation.
As avid skiers, a drying room, separate laundry, and ski gear room was designed for easy access off the rear driveway. As well as easy access for their own vehicles for their visiting friends, plenty of parking was designed in the in and out driveway accessing the wide double garage and downstairs entry and stairwell.
This home’s enviable location with its jaw dropping views gave us the cue to not compete but rather to complement it by reflecting stunning landscape. Therefore, we designed a boomerang shaped home that would capture the views as much as possible with plenty of full-length glass windows to take in the views from all perspectives.
The robust and striking metal roof and wall cladding ensures minimal maintenance plus delivers a picture frame effect of the scenery while the simple boomeranged metal box form anchors itself on a natural stone base.
