Low Profile Waikato Home

Located on a prime block of land in Matamata will lie a simple, sleek, high-performance home. A requirement of the clients was to have a home that is modern and uncomplicated while still retaining elements of a rural aesthetic.

The house is effectively comprised of three wings: Two bedroom wings flank the main open-plan, central living wing. This simplistic layout provides great function and connection which will be a pleasure to live in. Orientated to maximise the outlook over the land on both sides, and providing protection to main outdoor spaces, the home will have a constant connection with the land whilst also capturing the sun’s energy.

Constructed using 140mm timber framing, 9mm RAB and packed with R4.0 batts this house will be a solid and durable structure.  Adding to that will be an insulated concrete floor, high spec aluminium joinery and substantial insulation in a timber framed roof. Passive solar heat gain will be retained within the thermal envelope.

The decision to use the increased 140mm timber frame was a simple one. The additional 50mm of frame thickness provides the opportunity to significantly increase insulation levels for a minimal additional investment. Coupled with the 9mm H3.2 structural square edge plywood RAB, the result is a very strong building that will be warm, quiet and durable – a no-brainer for buildings in exposed environments such as this.

A palette of honest materials including exposed concrete features, long run colorsteel cladding and painted concrete brick veneer, will serve to highlight the home's bold but unpretentious design.
