Chatham Islands Lodge
Chatham Islands Lodge
Located in the Chatham Islands this project has been an exciting look into a very remote location and the challenges associated with construction so far off the mainland. It’s a 2hr flight and there are very little to no resources available on the island so all products and materials must be shipped from NZ.
Our clients have been running a successful lodge on the island for a number of years and that is one of only two options available for tourists. Recently the ports breakwater was upgraded and there has been a decision made to lengthen and strengthen the existing runway. This will open the island up to a wider market of visitors as these improvements come online.
This new proposed eco lodge is designed to accommodate a small increase in the number of visitors to the island and give them a very desirable accommodation option. The structure is design in ICF (insulated concrete form) in order to provide the most robust construction methods in an extremely harsh environment while providing the best performance possible in regard to comfort within the structure.
The design has replicated the local landscape with regards to an upside-down roof that reflects the hills behind the water front building location. The other material selectins have been chosen to best replicate many of the colours and textures around the site thus nestling the structure into the coastal environment.
